Review:
The Blue Boar is a classic real ale pub, light and open with wooden floors, plenty of breweriana, including some quirky clocks, (one which confused us all by running backwards), a couple of booths and a reasonably well-stocked bar. The prices are average for the City centre and they have a pretty average beer selection on three pumps, it seems more tourist and older drinker orientated by the lack of beer style choice. There’s no real outside space, just the entrance courtyard which doesn’t allow smoking or drinks, a bit of a downfall for this old area of York. But the Blue Boar does also have a quaint and atmospheric basement room with comfy sofas hidden away down the spiral stairs which is frequently used for live music and other events. With music piped throughout the pub from the basement or with live acts regularly playing upstairs there’s usually always something to keep you entertained if the beer doesn’t. The toilets are a little basic but perfectly functional and access is only a little restrictive at the entrance steps and lower section of the bar. During the day it’s also very family friendly, we’ve been in a few times with my little one for one of their great burgers. Even with the steady flow of tourists this is still a welcoming local style traditional pub which keeps pulling us back in every now and again.
