Review:
At the start of 2017 Fossgate welcomed another new bar and restaurant chain, this time the very vintage Cosy Club. Taking residence within the vast space of York’s first purpose built Cinema - The Electric Theatre, it’s all very in keeping with their theme. Built in 1911 in an impressive baroque style but closed in 1951 as a Cinema, most people will remember it as Macdonald’s Furniture store which used to have a large stuffed hippo outside for many years. Thankfully Cosy Club has lovingly restored the building, retaining the large open feel of a theatre but still creating their trademark cosy spaces within. The majority of the venue towards the back is set aside for dining and up on the mezzanine above too. The large bar stretches down the right-hand side and is fronted by high stool sitting area with a more relaxed collection of vintage 1930s sofas and chairs in the windows, overhung by a mass of period lampshades. This eclectic mix of décor blends perfectly with the fabric of the building, it has a feel of the heyday of the British Empire with proud watercolour portraits, a large dominating simple chandelier and art deco touches throughout. Behind the bar is also another nod to their history with red theatre curtains draping to either side. The selection on the bar is a bit less impressive, but at least they have two well-kept real ale pumps to go along with a small selection of keg and bottles. Prices were pretty reasonable as well. It’s a beautifully ambient and softly lit space that really does welcome you in, although with the high ceilings it can become quite loud. Access to the ground floor is excellent as you would expect with them fitting a totally new large glassed front fascia, there’s even a few outside tables and chairs which benefit from the overhanging architecture for some protection from the elements. The toilets don’t disappoint either, not too flashy but the cheeky addition of Country Life pinups is amusing. I would see Cosy Club more as a restaurant which has a good sized drinking area, as maybe their beer selection reflects, but it’s a wonderful unique space to visit even if you’d only stay for one drink.
