-Eagle & Child-
Review:
The Eagle & Child is the latest Leeds Brewery pub to pop up in York, recently taken over by Cameron's it still retains all that made it a great Leeds Brewery pub but with added Cameron's beer. It takes pride of place on High Petergate in what used to be Plunkets Restaurant, and they did leave a little reminder of this with one of their upstairs rooms retaining the name. The pub is a beautiful Grade II listed timber framed structure built in 1640 and they have been ever faithful to the building opening up and stripping it back so all the ancient features are visible.
Spread over three floors the main downstairs is airy with large windows to the front and sprawls back with loads of seating and access to a little pleasant walled courtyard. The bar is extensively stocked with plenty of Leeds Brewery’s quality beers amongst other guests, totalling 6 hand pumps and 8 kegs with the provision to have even more pumps on, 12 in total. Despite what some people may say about prices we found them fairly average for this area of town, at the end of the day if you’re going to drink a high percentage craft beer you’re going to pay a bit more for it, with pubs like this it’s more about the quality than the quantity and they certainly do win out on this point. The second floor has three rooms with bags of character, the main looking out onto the street with views of both the Minster and Bootham Bar, more seating and even a cute little room that looks to have been opened out recently baring the bones of the building with open brick and wood, the perfect place to get settled for a good while. The third floor has even more space and its own little bar; it is here you can see the autographs of all the Rolling Stones preserved in lipstick on the wall from their infamous visit to the previous Restaurant in the 1960s.
Everywhere you go there are low cosy beams and fun wonky floors, all of which just adds to the charm. Leeds brewery have done an exceptional job modernising but remaining true to the building’s heritage, even the toilets ooze simple Victorian class and that’s why the Eagle & Child is clearly one of the best pubs in York. It already feels as if it’s been here for years. Access too is pretty good to the lower levels and with regular live music there’s always something to keep you entertained. With such a variety of spaces, from the busy ground floor to the more private seating areas the scope of the pub is fantastic, suiting whatever you need, a good place to meet as well as relax, especially with such a great range of real ales and craft kegs. We can easily see a very regular return for us to The Eagle & Child.
