-Evil Eye-
Review:
The Evil Eye is another popular Stonegate destination, hidden behind a small off-licence which specialises predominantly in spirits. The inside is very vibrant with a kind of Middle Eastern shabby chic feel. There is a large bar which stretches down the main length of the back room which then opens out into a conservatory space and a very pleasant covered courtyard area with some fabulous views of the Minster. Unfortunately this is all that is really appealing about the Evil Eye as generally it’s pretty filthy, rowdy and takes ages to get served. This is probably due to the huge amounts of cocktails on the menu, which I’m assured are some of the best in York. They do have a good selection of bottled beers but I’m not sure it’s worth the effort to get to the bar and deal with the grumpy staff, especially given the high prices. There used to be an internet café upstairs by day but this space has now been transformed into a specialist Gin shop, so don’t expect extra breathing space on the first floor. Access is okay but limited to the ground floor, that’s if you can get through the crowds and the narrow rooms. The toilets leave much to be desired, as you can expect they get a good hammering every weekend. The Evil Eye is certainly popular but feels very overrated given there’s much nicer places on Stonegate. Maybe it’s just not our scene, either way it is not a place we would regularly return to. Best left to those who love their cocktails, as I can imagine if they can do that right then that’s what keeps pulling people back in to overlook its other faults.
