Review:
Situated in the shadows of Bootham Bar and the City Walls the Lamb & Lion Inn is a well presented Victorian style pub, so much so it’s almost like stepping back in time. Upon entering you are greeted by a small bar area adorned with old gas style lamps with the old shop front looking onto Bootham Bar. It can be a struggle to get served at the bar though and the staff can be pretty rude, once you've queued for an excessively long time the reward is a very limited and bland selection of corporate real ales which certainly aren't worth the price you pay. The rest of the building is a collection of nooks and crannies, quaint little rooms linked by narrow corridors, with oak panelled walls and comfy seats. Although this really adds to the character it does mean the place isn’t very accessible or particularly family friendly, but that is a bit of a restriction of the building. What really pulls the Lamb & Lion Inn out of the dirt is their beer garden, again accessibility is a real issue but if you can get past the narrow steps then you enter what feels like a secret garden raising up steeply along the City Walls and shaded by a peaceful canopy of mature trees. As one of the most popular beer gardens in York it can be a really busy area but the views of the Minters that are unparalleled, it's just unfortunate that despite it's attractive interior the rest of the pub is so bad and seems to just rely on a tourist trade based purely on its location rather than its reputation, which it has certainly let slip over the last few years.
