Review:
Previously known as Sutlers the Fossgate Tap is situated at the top of Fossgate in the old Army & Navy store, having extensively redeveloped the building within strict planning regulations in a wonderfully grand and quirky Edwardian style. There are trendy shabby chic touches throughout like the Edison bulb cage lights over the bar, old machinery repurposed as tables and one first floor room even has bowler hat lights. It’s imaginative and different amongst the usual swathe of Victorian stylings that many pubs in York stick with. Being unable to remove any walls may have been seen as a problem for such a bar but they’ve embraced this restraint by building a unique theme in each of the small rooms upstairs. Linked by a narrow corridor each room is a mini marvel, a stately dining room, an informal lounge with wingback chairs, even a small second bar dominated by a low beamed ceiling, the attention to detail is superb with clever use of picture and pattern wallpapers in each space. The ground floor is also on two levels, the first main room is easily accessed from the street and contains the toilets, which are a pretty spot on, it may be a new bar but these were top scoring bogs! The higher end of the narrow room is the home to an impressively well stocked bar extensively but not exclusively featuring their partnered local brewery Turning Point, and as anyone from York will tell you Turning Point's beers are superb. So it's nice to know there'll always be something quality on offer. With a great range of both cask and keg the only down point it that it is a little pricey. There is also window seating by the bar reaching all the way up to another small room at the top, so despite it always being a pretty bustling bar there’s usually some nook to find a seat in. Due to its location there is no outside space but we can pass on this point as it’s hardly a consideration when you have such an interesting building to explore. They frequently have live music and the food is splendid too, access isn't too bad but it can be a little difficult at busy time. Fossgate Tap is certainly one of the more unique and welcoming pubs in York and well worth a visit.
