Review:
Situated a short walk out of the centre and into a more residential area of York, The Golden Ball is worth the little extra distance to reach. A classic example of a Victorian corner pub it retains the original late 1800s layout with a tap room, snug and sports room as well as a cosy ‘L’ shaped walled courtyard which is one of the nicest beer gardens in York. This is a community pub at heart, especially as it is a co-op run by a group of locals who took over the tenancy after the previous landlords retired, meaning that it has been retained as the heart of the community in suburb which has lost most of its original pubs. It has a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere and a good selection of six real ales at regular prices. The main let down in our opinion was the outhouse style toilets in the yard which although not terrible didn’t really have a pleasant aroma and could certainly do with updating. The rest of the décor throughout is well maintained in a classic Victorian pub style with just that little bit of modernity injected. There's classic brass topped tables and stools in the bar area with comfy bench seating round the perimeter and one wall is covered with a large map of Yorkshire. Everywhere you look you see lovely period features like the glazed tiles to the front of the bar. You don’t get many pubs like this in York anymore and although some may feel it’s a little dated most will love the nostalgic feeling of seeing a well-used family friendly pub with good access which is more than just a servery for beer. With local eggs and artisan breads also on offer, not to mention the regular live music, events, club meetings, art shows and even a room dedicated to Bar Billiards, there’s plenty to keep you entertained and retain The Golden Ball as a focus of the community and beyond. Don’t be scared to head out of the City centre’s comfort zone to give this wonderful pub a try, once you do you'll definitely be back.
