Review:
Situated on the busy thoroughfare of Church Street the Golden Lion literally glows with its beautiful ornate decorated gold signage and a classical City centre pub façade. Within it is presented as a single large room with stained wooden floors throughout and many seating areas. Studded leather benches add a little to the quality but it does feel quite dark and gloomy. The bar is towards the back left hand side and has a five hand pumps with a rather disappointing selection of corporate beers all averagely priced. It’s all fairly run-of-the-mill with nothing really standing out; it’s just a traditional generic pubco pub. They do have a small roof terrace which is only open during the day but needless to say it’s okay but nothing special, as are the toilets. Due to the layout it is brilliant for access though and with a focus on food family friendly. There are also several discrete TVs situated around the pub which show live sport if that’s your thing. If there was a better range of beer we might have been able to overlook some of the mediocrity but this is York and there’s much better choice to be had just round the corner.
