-The Last Drop Inn-
Review:
It was with a happy heart that we saw the reopening of The Last Drop Inn in 2021. Previously one of the York Brewery’s flagship pubs it had closed during the pandemic and was turned into a bottle shop for Black Sheep. The North Yorkshire Masham based Brewery had recently purchased the rights to brew the recipes of the now defunct York Brewery and along with that came its few remaining pubs. There was worry that it wouldn’t reopen but to be fair it was in dire need of a refurbishment so a little time closed to enable the fantastic refurbishment that Black Sheep did was certainly welcome. It wasn’t too long before pints were being pulled behind the bar once more.
The Last Drop Inn is a traditional pub with a split-level L shaped single room, the main frontage being fully glazed and with excellent level access directly into the bright and airy front room. It’s a great place to sit and watch the hustle and bustle of the street outside and across to the leafy Kings Square. The décor is simple and clean, wooden floors, cladding and open brickwork. It is a tad bright and over lit but the large moorland mural across one entire wall does give a bit more depth and warmth to the room.
The bar is hidden to the rear righthand side of the L and what delights you’ll find round there, with 8 cask ale hand pumps, most of which feature Black Sheep’s great beers along with rotating guest ales from numerous local breweries. The price is reasonable for the location and the quality is excellent, there’s always a good selection to keep even the fussiest beer drinker happy for at least a few rounds. There are a few steps up to the bar area which includes some more seating and access out to their lovely little secluded yard with its built-in timber benches and festoon lighting. The disabled toilets are at the back of the building as well, I’m assuming they will have some access solution to get up those steps as such things are usually legally required. You’ll find the regular toilets on the second floor up a flight of stairs which are off the main front room. They’re fresh, smart and modern and very pleasant to visit.
The Last Drop frequently have live music, quizzes and events, so despite being a city centre pub on a busy tourist street it still has that welcoming local feel, especially as it’s dog and family friendly too. Since the refurbishment it’s certainly firmly back on our map as an essential stop for some great beer if you’re about in York.
