Review:
The Old White Swan is a superbly presented example of a traditional 16th Century coaching inn, entering through the Victorian style covered courtyard you are presented with several different rooms and two main bars which are brimming with hand pumps and quality real ales. There are numerous quaint nooks and crannies with a mix of cosy armchairs and sofas softly lit and surrounded with ancient oak beams, open brickwork and real fires. It has a friendly and bustling atmosphere which really harks back to the long history of the building as a public house. This is definitely one of the best pubs in York for real ale with a massive selection at a very reasonable price; it’s our perfect idea of what a great historic York pub should be like. Although the courtyard is rather small it is definitely one of the nicer outside spaces, with the added bonus of a conservatory roof to keep out the weather and smokers. But smokers do not despair as there is also more outside space out to the rear yard which is pleasant enough. The Victorian toilets are clean and functional and allow very easy access, as does the rest of the pub with it all being on one level, perfect for those that need it. The Old White Swan continues to be one of the best pubs in York, ticking a lot of boxes, very family friendly, great outside spaces, a relaxed vibe with lots of good beer and a relatively late licence. Other publicans take note; this is how you score a 5/5! OWS keep up the good work and we’ll be back soon.
