-Oscar's Wine Bar & Bistro-
Review:
Oscar’s was always a very popular destination in days gone by, that was until they expanded and left the location that is now Stonegate Yard. The expansion into a larger building just round the corner on Swinegate is obviously very much focused on the food aspect of the business although from its previous reputation this was very lacklustre and disappointing when we ate there. But I digress, as these reviews are meant to focus on the venue as a bar and unfortunately this really isn’t what Oscar’s is any more. Yes it’s marketed as a Wine Bar & Bistro, but it pretty much fails on all aspects of this in our opinion. There is a small area by the bar that the casual drinker may find space amongst people waiting for dining, but with their extremely limited selection of beer, just some basic lagers, you’d be hard pressed to find a reason to visit, especially considering how overly expensive it is. The décor is very nice though, open brickwork and wood panelling, paired with brightly patterned wallpaper and ironwork, but the toilets were an absolute mess and no matter how pretty a place looks it’s the service and selection that is more important, both of which were seriously lacking. Such a shame as we used to love the old Oscar’s. Even if it is a Wine Bar you’re after there are far more much better bars in the immediate vicinity.
