-Pivni-
Review:
Pivni has stood out as an exceptional bar pretty much since it first opened; forging ahead along with the craft beer revolution it has a well-earned reputation as the place to visit for the very best selections of beer, whether it be keg, cask or bottle. Situated on the narrow little street of Patrick Pool connecting to Newgate Market it is a stunning timber framed building dating back to 1190. The ground floor is very narrow with a couple of tables and plays host to the long bar jam-packed with pumps, very reminiscent of a Belgian Café Bar. Deep burgundy walls and polished pumps glisten in the subtle lighting lending an intimate and friendly welcome amongst the ancient dark timbers above. This can mean that actually getting to the bar can be a bit of a struggle as it blocks up very easily but with the recent addition of table service this could solve some of the issues. Obviously the beer choice is exemplary but where Pivni really comes alive when you climb the stairs. The first floor is a wonderfully large room with timber exposed everywhere and a quaintly rickety floor. There’s plenty of seating and a more airy feel along with the low hanging brass lamps and a jukebox to guarantee some entertainment. The third floor conversion whisks you even further away from York with the feel of a Bavarian hunting lodge, matching the historic wooden frame with a series of timber clad booths and a beautiful piece of neon lighting casting a ruby glow throughout. The toilets are a little compact and watch that step up, but they are perfectly serviceable, the extra space gained by them being reduced in size is a much better use of space. So although they do suffer from a lack of any outside area and access can be a little tricky this is clearly one of the best pubs to visit in York, a 5/5 all round and a wholehearted recommendation from us.
