-Plonkers Wine Bar & Bistro-
Review:
Plonkers is a fairly trendy wine bar situated within the flood zone on Cumberland Street, hence it’s heavily tiled and open brick design, which seems a good idea especially as from street level you descend into a sort of semi-basement area which is the main floor of the bar. With a long brick bar down one side and booth seating to the other the waterproof nature of the décor actually makes the bar feel like a kind of modern American/Parisian mix but dominated by the low old English beamed roof. It’s a strange blend of styles but actually works and makes for quite a welcoming atmosphere. As a wine bar beer selection is pretty limited for the real ale fan with just a couple of generic keg versions, there’s more choice for lager and of course spirits, wine and cocktails. Prices are a little higher but this is more to do with the available choice of drinks. Upstairs there’s a larger room which keeps the paired back look with a slightly more Asian theme, there’s more seating and a little bar up there too which is handy at busy times. Here you’ll also find the toilets which are compact but perfectly functional. It’s just worth noting that due to its layout access can be quite limited with steps down and up for both floors. Normally there is no outside area, but during the day Plonkers have their own section of prime riverside area down by the Ouse with seated service which closes later on in the evening as is reflected in our score, but it is worth noting if you’re out on a sunny day and looking for some riverside space. Overall Plonkers is a lovely little friendly wine bar, with its closeness to a nightclub it can get rather boisterous at times but mainly it’s a very peaceful and relaxed place that we really recommend if you’re into your wine and spirits.
