Review:
Although situated smack bang in the middle of the City centre the Three Cranes is definitely a local’s local. If you do manage to pluck up the courage to enter there’s a good chance if they don’t recognise your face you’ll get a good staring at by the locals, but they do seem mostly harmless. This is a very vibrant pub with a big mix of people and nothing much seems to have changed over the years, it really is an old style pub with just two rooms and plenty of clichéd décor like Willow Pattern plates on the walls and faded pictures of York. It’s thoroughly worn through and pretty naff but they actually did have a couple of decent beers on at a fairly cheap price but I’m not sure that makes up for the rest of it. The toilets were dreadful and their idea of an outdoor area is the tiny storage yard to the rear, more for smoking than anything else and on a typical evening there’ll be plenty of that. In contradiction to the rest of the pub it actually boasts a beautifully tiled pictorial of wading birds to the front although the true history of their name is actually a reference to three commercial cranes nearby which used to dominate the skyline. So if you like it loud, old school, rough and frayed round the edges or a bit of karaoke then this is the bar for you but not one for us.
